The second digit is the screen size (7490 = 14-inch, 7390 = 13.3-inch, 7270 = 12.5-inch) and the third digit marks the model year: 7480 (2017), 7490 (2018), 7400 (2019), 7410 (2020), 7420 (2021). Which Dell Latitude Should You Buy?

Latitude 7490: the best seller

The 7490 is the model our customers buy most. It runs 8th Gen Intel Core processors, the first generation with four cores in a thin business laptop, so it handles Office, many browser tabs and video calls better than any 6th or 7th Gen model. It has two RAM slots, a 14-inch Full HD screen and a full set of ports: USB-C (Thunderbolt 3 on some units), three USB-A, HDMI and Ethernet.

Best for: office work and students who want a reliable laptop at a fair price. See the Latitude 7490 i5 price and the Latitude 7490 i7 price.

Latitude 7400: smaller body, same power

The 7400 uses the same class of 8th Gen processor as the 7490 in a noticeably smaller and lighter body, thanks to thin screen borders. Pick it if you carry your laptop every day. The 7400 2-in-1 adds a touch screen that folds back into a tablet, but its RAM is soldered to the board, so buy the memory size you need.

See the Latitude 7400 i5 price, the Latitude 7400 i7 price and the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 price.

Latitude 7480: the lowest price in the 7000 series

The 7480 has the same build quality and keyboard as the 7490 at a lower price, with 6th or 7th Gen dual-core processors. It is fine for email, documents and online classes. Graphics are integrated Intel HD (HD 520 on 6th Gen, HD 620 on 7th Gen), with no separate graphics card. See the Latitude 7480 i5 7th Gen price.

Latitude 7390 and 7300: 13.3-inch and light

The same 8th Gen performance as the 7490 in a 13.3-inch body that is easier to carry. The 7390 2-in-1 adds a folding touch screen. See the Latitude 7390 i5 price.

Latitude 7420: the newest mainstream choice

11th Gen Intel Core with Iris Xe graphics and Thunderbolt 4. It is clearly faster than the 8th Gen models and has several more years of Windows 11 support ahead of it. Its RAM is soldered, so choose 16GB. See the Latitude 7420 i5 11th Gen price.

Latitude 3189 and 3190 2-in-1: budget touch laptops

Small 11.6-inch convertible laptops with Intel Pentium processors, made for schools. They are good for online classes, browsing and documents, not for heavy software or many programs at once. See the Latitude 3190 2-in-1 price.

Quick Pick by Use

Windows 11 on a Used Latitude

Microsoft officially supports Windows 11 on Intel 8th Gen processors and newer. That covers the Latitude 7490, 7400, 7390, 7300, 7410, 7420, 5400, 5410, 5300, 5310 and 3420, and the 8th Gen units of the 3300 and 3490 we stock. The 6th and 7th Gen models (E7470, 7270, 7480, 5480, and 7th Gen 5490 units) are not on Microsoft’s supported list, nor are the Pentium-based 3189 and 3190. Windows 10 no longer gets free security updates, so ask us which setup suits your work before choosing one of these.

The Latitude 7455 uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and runs Windows on ARM. It has excellent battery life, but some older programs and printer drivers do not run on ARM. Ask us to check your software before you buy it.

Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook?

Both are business laptops built for years of corporate use, and both are sold here with the same warranty. The Latitude 7490 and 7400 usually cost less than an EliteBook of the same generation. The HP EliteBook 845 (G7 and newer) gives more processor cores per taka thanks to AMD Ryzen, and the HP EliteBook 840 is the closest Intel alternative to the Latitude 7400 and 7490.

What to Check When Buying a Used Dell Latitude

1. Battery: check the battery report (run powercfg /batteryreport in Windows). It compares current full-charge capacity with the original design capacity.
2. Display: test the screen on full white and full black for dead pixels and uneven backlight. On a 2-in-1, test touch across the whole screen.
3. Keyboard and touchpad: type every key and test the touchpad buttons and gestures.
4. BIOS password: business laptops sometimes arrive with a BIOS or administrator password from the previous company. Make sure the BIOS opens without one.
5. Windows activation: confirm Windows shows as activated under Settings → System → Activation (Windows 11) or Settings → Update & Security → Activation (Windows 10).
6. Charger: use a genuine Dell charger of the correct wattage. The 7480 and 7490 charge from Dell’s round-pin charger or a 65W USB-C charger; the 7400, 7420 and newer charge over USB-C.
