HP EliteBook 845 vs 840: Which Used EliteBook Should You Buy in Bangladesh? (2026)
The HP EliteBook 845 and 840 are the two most popular used business laptops at Digital Computer Shop — the 845 is our single best-selling model and the 840 is close behind. They share the same 14-inch aluminium chassis, keyboard and build quality within each generation. The real difference is inside: the 845 runs AMD Ryzen PRO, the 840 runs Intel Core. This guide explains what that means in daily use, generation by generation, so you can pick the right one for your budget.
Every price below is live from our stock and every unit is tested and covered by our service warranty.
The short answer
- Choose the 845 if you want more processor cores for the money — about 30–40% more multi-core performance at the same price.
- Choose the 840 if your office software or IT policy expects Intel (vPro, some legacy drivers), you need Thunderbolt 4 on the G8, or you want slightly stronger built-in graphics on the G8 (Intel Iris Xe).
- For most buyers — office work, study, browsing, light editing — the 845 gives more performance per taka, which is why it is our top seller.
Generation by generation
| Generation | EliteBook 845 | EliteBook 840 |
|---|---|---|
| G7 (2020) | Ryzen 5/7 PRO 4000 — 6 to 8 cores | Intel Core i5/i7 10th Gen — 4 cores |
| G8 (2021) | Ryzen 5/7 PRO 5000 — 6 to 8 cores | Intel Core i5/i7 11th Gen — 4 cores, Iris Xe, Thunderbolt 4 |
| G9 (2022) | Ryzen 6000 PRO — DDR5, Radeon 660M / 680M, USB4 | Intel Core 12th Gen |
| G10 (2023) | Ryzen 7040 PRO — DDR5 | Intel Core 13th Gen |
At every generation the 845 has more CPU cores than the 840 at a similar price. The 840’s Intel chips are slightly faster on single tasks, which you will rarely notice in office work.
Performance: Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U vs Core i5-1135G7 (G8)
The G8 is the generation most buyers choose, so here is how its two most common processors compare. Figures are Notebookcheck database averages (September 2026).
| 845 G8 — Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U | 840 G8 — Core i5-1135G7 | |
|---|---|---|
| Cores / threads | 6 / 12 | 4 / 8 |
| Max boost | 4.2 GHz | 4.2 GHz |
| Cache | 16 MB L3 | 8 MB L3 |
| Cinebench R23 multi-core | about 6,600 | about 4,700 |
| Cinebench R23 single-core | about 1,360 | about 1,320 |
| Built-in graphics | Radeon Vega 7 | Intel Iris Xe (80 EU) |
What it means: the 845 is roughly 30–40% faster when many things run at once — exporting a video, compiling code, a big Excel model, dozens of browser tabs. For single tasks such as opening files, browsing and Word, the two feel the same. The Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U (eight cores) extends the lead further, to about 70% over an 840 G8 with Core i7-1165G7.
Graphics: Radeon vs Intel Iris Xe
This is where the answer depends on the generation.
- G7: the 845’s Radeon graphics are clearly ahead of the 840 G7’s Intel UHD graphics.
- G8: the 840’s Intel Iris Xe is slightly faster than the 845’s Radeon Vega — about 20% in 3DMark with the Core i5, and about 50% with the Core i7.
- G9: the 845 G9 with Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U has Radeon 680M, the strongest graphics in either range — about 50% ahead of Iris Xe. The Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U’s Radeon 660M is roughly equal to Iris Xe.
Important for the 840: Intel Iris Xe only works with two memory modules (dual channel). A used 840 with a single RAM stick runs as basic “Intel UHD Graphics” and is noticeably slower in graphics. Every 840 we sell for design or editing work is set up with two modules — ask us to confirm on any unit.
Ports and connectivity (G8)
| EliteBook 845 G8 | EliteBook 840 G8 | |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C | 2 × USB-C 10 Gbps (charging and display) | 2 × Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps, charging and display) |
| USB-A | 2 × 5 Gbps | 2 × 5 Gbps |
| HDMI | HDMI 2.0 | HDMI 2.0b |
| Ethernet port | No (USB adapter) | No (USB adapter) |
| RAM | 2 slots, DDR4-3200, up to 64GB | 2 slots, DDR4-3200, up to 64GB |
| Battery | 53 Wh | 53 Wh |
| Weight | from 1.37 kg | from 1.35 kg |
Thunderbolt matters only if you use a Thunderbolt dock or fast external storage. For a normal USB-C charger, monitor or USB-C hub, the 845’s ports do the same job. From the G9 onward, the 845 also gets 40 Gbps USB4.
HP EliteBook 845 — AMD Ryzen PRO

More processor cores make the 845 the stronger all-rounder for multitasking. It handles many browser tabs, Office, Zoom and light photo editing at the same time without slowing down.

Battery, screen and build
Within the same generation both models use the same 14-inch Full HD anti-glare screen, backlit spill-resistant keyboard, fingerprint reader and aluminium body, so comfort and durability are equal. Battery life on a used unit depends mostly on the battery’s health, not on AMD vs Intel — we test every battery and tell you its condition before you buy.
Which one for students, office, freelancing and programming?
Students: an EliteBook 845 G7 or G8 with Ryzen 5 PRO is the best value. It runs Office, Zoom, Google Classroom and many browser tabs smoothly, and the six cores keep it responsive for years.
Office and business: both work well. Choose the 840 if your company’s IT team manages Intel vPro devices or uses software certified only for Intel; otherwise the 845 gives you more for the same money.
Photo editing, light video and programming: go for an eight-core Ryzen 7 PRO 845 (G7 or G8) with 16GB RAM, or an 845 G9 with Ryzen 7 PRO, whose Radeon 680M graphics are the strongest in either range.
Freelancing (Fiverr, Upwork, design): an 845 G8 Ryzen 7 PRO or 845 G9 handles Photoshop, Illustrator and client calls together; add 16GB RAM. If your work is mostly graphics-heavy design, an 845 G9 Ryzen 7 PRO (Radeon 680M) or an 840 G8 with two RAM modules (Iris Xe) is the better choice than an 845 G8.
Programming: choose the 845 for its extra cores — builds, Docker containers and virtual machines finish faster — and 16–32GB RAM, which both models support in two slots up to 64GB.
Gaming: neither is a gaming laptop, but an 845 G9 with Ryzen 7 PRO (Radeon 680M) runs older and lighter games at modest settings better than any 840. On the G8, the 840’s Iris Xe is slightly ahead of the 845’s Radeon Vega.
What to check before buying a used EliteBook
- Battery health: ask for the battery report. Above 80% health gives a full working day on the G8 and newer.
- Screen: look for dead pixels, bright spots and even backlight on a white page. Many units offer an optional Sure View privacy screen — check the model if you want one.
- Keyboard and touchpad: test every key and both touchpad buttons; EliteBook keyboards are durable, so wear usually means heavy past use.
- Ports and charging: test USB-C charging, both USB-A ports and HDMI. On the 840 G8, confirm Thunderbolt works with a dock if you need it.
- BIOS lock: corporate units can carry a BIOS password. Every EliteBook we sell is checked and unlocked.
- Warranty: buy only with a written warranty and a shop you can walk back into — our Dhaka and Brahmanbaria branches service every laptop we sell.
